Cumberland Bar, Edinburgh
Tucked away at the Drummond Place end of Cumberland Street, the Cumberland bar (or the Cumbie as it’s known to its regulars) is a relaxed and cosy Victorian-style bar.
The daily menu combines unpretentious gastropub classics with a few modern twists. A Sunday roast is also available, with options including lamb, mutton and veal.
It’s a popular place with locals and workers from the nearby offices, although now that the huge Battlestar Galactica shaped RBS technology centre on Fettes Row has closed, the lunchtime and after-work crowds are a little less manic.
They have always had a great real ale selection, with eight taps pouring a good mix of local and guest suppliers.
The main bar area is wood panelled with many period details remaining and, with the open fire, it’s a great place to spend a chilly winter evening.
Beer gardens and, indeed any, outside space are at a premium in the New Town and the Cumberland bar has one of the biggest and brightest beer gardens going.
