One of the newer additions to the Leith bar scene, Smoke & Mirrors can be found on Constitution Street in what used to be the Alan Breck Lounge.
There’s no exterior signage, but it is very easy to spot. Just look for the massive, colourful hanging baskets and the gentle glow from strings of fairy lights shining through the windows.
The walls have been stripped back to expose the original stones and the décor is a wonderfully eclectic mix. Part boho, part garden party and part fairytale, with eye-catching art on the walls by local artist Hailey Beavis.
It’s operated by the same people who run the nearby Bar Brig and Brig Below venue, and has the same friendly and laid-back vibe. The emphasis here is all about sustainability and producing minimum waste. The bar is powered by 100% renewable energy and all of their beers, cider, gin, whisky and soft drinks are Scottish, helping to keep the impact of importing as minimal as possible. If only Scotland produced wine…
A wide range of Fair Trade and organic drinks are on offer, with plenty of vegan and gluten free options available too. An indoor window garden produces fresh herbs for use in their cocktails and gin perfect-serves. They also have re-usable bamboo straws as an alternative to plastic.
There’s no kitchen but they have some tasty cheese and charcuterie boards with produce from legendary Edinburgh cheesemongers I.J. Mellis.
They’re dog friendly too and children are welcome until 8pm.
