Hidden away up Northumberland Street Lane, which runs between Dublin Street and Nelson Street in the New Town, the Star Bar is one of Edinburgh’s true hidden gems!
It has probably the best jukebox in Edinburgh, packed full of classic rock, punk and indie standards, and, at £1 for 5 songs, it can be seriously addictive. Note – there are two selection panels in the front and back bars, so don’t be too surprised that you have to wait a while for your songs to come on when you think that you have the monopoly on what’s coming up. I did this, but it was a good excuse to hang out a little bit longer!
In addition to the jukebox there’s a fußball table where things can get pretty competitive.
The bar is pretty dark with not much natural light, but there is a small beer garden to be found at the rear, which is an amazingly chilled place to spend a sunny day or warm summers evening.
Clientele is fairly mixed between New Town locals, students and the odd few lost tourists.
