Located down a short run of steps at the top of Broughton Street, The Basement Bar has been knocking out tasty Mexican-inspired food and tequila by the bucketload for over 20 years.
As the name suggests, it’s a basement bar, but it never feels gloomy, as it is lightened by a range of colourful Mexican/Day-Of-The Dead paintings along one wall, along with tables and chairs in bright hues of turquoise, red and green which are suitably toned down by the adobe coloured walls. There’s also a well light mini hanging-garden in the main dining area which makes the space feel much bigger than it is.
Mexican food is their speciality and they do it well. There is a range of speciality tacos to choose from, alongside other well-executed standards such as enchiladas, fajitas, burritos, pork and beef albondigas (Mexican-style meatballs) and, of course, nachos! Top tip – go for the guacamole with homemade tortilla chips; they make the guac fresh at your table and it’s really tasty! You can choose what extras you want, but just tell your server to go ahead and put everything in it. They make their own hot sauce concoctions too, ranging from mild to napalm! You have been warned… There’s also a Mexican-inspired brunch menu available at the weekends.
The bar has a small outdoor courtyard seating area that gets a surprising amount of sun —when it does appear. As it’s covered by the entrance steps of the building above and heated to boot, you can take advantage of it all year round.
There is also tequila! Lots, of, tequila!
Tequila cocktails, flights of tequila, sangritas to go with your tequila, blanco (young tequila, aged for a maximum of 60 days), reposado (aged for between 60 days and a year) and añejo and extra añejo (aged for at least a year or three years for the extra).
Did we mention the tequila? Oh, and there’s mezcal too!
