Located in Morningside, the Dominion Cinema, or the ‘Dom’ as it’s know by locals, is one of Edinburgh’s oldest cinemas. It is also completely independent having been owned and run by the Cameron family since they first opened the doors in January 1938.
Designed in the art deco ‘Streamline Moderne’ style of architecture, it took only 16 weeks to build at a cost of £25,000, and originally had one screen in a huge auditorium that had a whopping 1360 seats.
There have been a few changes over the years, there are now 4 screens, but much of the original interior decoration remains.
All the seats are pretty comfortable, but for a really special night out they have the ‘First Class’ experience. Here you can relax on reclining leather sofas and enjoy at your seat service from the dedicated bar, with drinks served in proper glasses and your popcorn in a bowl not a cardboard box. Perfect for date night!
The cinema has a strong tradition of appealing to a family audience and has never shown an X-rated film.
