Located on Lothian Road, the Filmhouse cinema has three screens and shows a wide range of films from the latest crowd-pleasing blockbuster to out-there, odd-ball art-house offerings, family films, and classic re-releases.
Operated by a charity, it opened in 1978 in a building that once housed a church, and was originally a one-screen affair. The Filmhouse is also the current home of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the longest continually running film festival in the world which has been going since 1947, the same year as the International Festival started.
Outside of the Film Festival there are regular events throughout the year including special Q&A screenings and other mini festivals including our favourite, the annual, weekend long, horror festival, ‘Dead by Dawn’. On Monday mornings there are special screenings for carers and babies called appropriately ‘For Crying Out Loud’.
The Filmhouse is also home to a very popular café bar serving up freshly prepared, tasty grub with lots of vegetarian and vegan options (they’ve won a few awards for those), there’s a good selection of beers both on draft and packaged and a decent wine list as well. You can take your drinks into the cinemas too!
