Home to one of Edinburgh’s biggest beer gardens, the Pear Tree is a veritable Edinburgh institution. While the recent refurbishment may not be to everyone’s taste, and the loss of the Blind Poet is nothing short of a tragedy, it has definitely made it easier to get served when it’s busy.
Interior decor aside, the main draw is obviously the beer garden. Even on the busiest day, you can usually get a spot at one of their big wooden tables. It’s a real mixed crowd and, given its proximity to the university, fairly student but on one of the rare sunny days that we get here, people will flock from all corners to enjoy a beer in the sunshine.
Burgers and other snacks are available from an outside BBQ to help soak up the booze, and there is also a stage which hosts local artists throughout the summer months and provides an all-day programme of entertainment during the Festival season.
There are various upper rooms that are available for private hire and which are used as venues for The Edinburgh Free Festival during August.
The only minor downside is that the temperature can drop fairly fast when the sun goes behind Appleton Tower in the early evening, but if you are suitably refreshed by then you probably won’t notice too much!
